Bug List
- My scooter will not start no matter how many times I try to kickstart it.
- This bug exists because the cold weather causes scooters to take longer to warm up to start, and if left unused for too long (such as over winter break) scooters can need repairing to start working again.
- People slamming their doors in the morning.
- This bug exists because people do not consider how loud a door slams when left to close alone, and the doors in my house are very heavy.
- Traffic on 13th Street at 5 pm.
- This bug exists because most classes/offices at UF end/close by 5 pm, and everyone is trying to leave campus at the same time. Because 13th Street is a major street by campus, it is a main road people use to go home.
- When people leave their laundry in the machines.
- This bug exists because it is easy to forget when a machine will end its cycle, and often times people may leave to do other tasks while their laundry is running and be busy when it is time to move their load.
- When people cancel plans at the last minute.
- This bug exists for many reasons, including that people may have something come up last minute that prevents them from attending an event.
- Limited parking at UF.
- This bug exists because UF is a huge university with over 50,000 students; there is not enough land space to provide parking for every single student at UF.
- Inconvenient parking lot locations for students.
- Because UF is a historic university, many parts of campus are only reachable by walking. It is not reasonable to build parking lots in the middle of campus nor is there available space for it; the only place for building is on the edges of campus, typically far from classes and residence halls.
- I always run out of storage of my devices.
- Apple devices come with a limited amount of storage based on how much you pay, and eventually you have to learn how to manage your content with how much space you have available on your device.
- When you walk through Turlington and people block you from walking to class to talk to you.
- This bug exists because student organizations want to get the word out about their events, and some believe the best way to reach the most amount of students is to reach them on their walk to class in one of the most popular areas on campus.
- When there are no spots in the library during finals week.
- This bug exists because during finals week everyone is looking for a quiet, distraction-free place to study with their peers. The library is the perfect place to study, and with the large student population at UF it can get crowded fast when everyone has exams at the same time.
- When people leave the water running when they brush their teeth.
- This bug exists people some people do not know that this is a major waste of water and can be prevented simply by turning the water off while brushing.
- When people leave the lights on in rooms they leave.
- This bug exists for many reasons, including some people are inconsiderate of the environment and others may be in a rush and forget to turn the lights out when they leave the room.
- When people don't bike in the bike lane.
- This bug exists because bikers may not want to be too close to traffic, or find the sidewalk easier and quicker to bike on.
- Not replacing the toilet paper roll.
- This bug exists because people are lazy and do not want to change out the toilet paper roll if they do not need it. It is easier to leave it for the next person who needs toilet paper to fix.
- Your roommate sleeping through alarms.
- This bug exists because some people do not set their alarm loud enough to hear while they are sleeping, or they are so exhausted that they do not register the sound when they are asleep.
- Talking at the movies.
- This bug exists because some people may want to comment on what they see and do not realize how loud and inconsiderate they are being.
- People who do not turn off their turn signals.
- This bug exists because when driving, it is easy to forget to turn your signal off after changing lanes/making a turn.
- When people do not do their work in a group assignment.
- This bug exists because some people do not feel the need to put in effort when they know it will be done by students who want the project done correctly; they know the project will be done regardless of it they put in effort or not.
- All of my classes are only offered online, yet I enrolled as a traditional person student.
- This bug exists because there are thousands of students enrolled in the classes I am taking, and the best way to accommodate such a large number of students is virtually. Additionally, online classes allow for students across the world to learn without being at UF (ex: for study abroad).
- When the bus is full in the morning.
- This bug exists because many students who live off campus take the same bus routes in the morning to get to their classes. Additionally, they are all going to campus at the same times because all classes have set start times; therefore, there is overcrowding on the busses at the times when classes are about to begin.
Reflection
When I first read the assignment description, I thought it would be easy to think of 20 "bugs" in my daily life. Throughout my day I feel like there are definitely more than 20 things that come my way that I find annoying. However, when sitting down to complete this assignment, I was stuck after Bug #1. I know there are things that "bug"me; however, it was very difficult to think of them when not in the moment. It took me a while to finally come up with my list, but after I reached Bug #10, it got easier and easier to think of bugs to complete the list. Overall, this assignment was much harder than expected when I started it, but by the end became progressively easier.
Shaina,
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to read that all your classes are only offered online though you enrolled as a traditional student. After reading your “why”, I understand how the reason behind it. I enjoyed reading all your bugs and their “why’s”. It was interesting to notice a snippet of your daily life cycle and the issues you encounter yourself, for I do not encounter many of those issues now. Fantastic bug list!
Hey Shaina,
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree with you more about the people at Turlington. I literally have to stand still sometimes just waiting for someone to move out of my way. Beyond that bug, I definitely agree with quite a bit of things that bug you. A lot of the bugs on here are related to the actions of other people, which unfortunately I can't foresee a means to change the actions of people, but the way to solve a lot of these problems is by changing the environment around us.
Hi Shaina,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how it was very hard to think of my bugs in the moment. That is why I went through an entire day and recorded anything that bothered me throughout the day, which really helped me make my list. Additionally, I relate to make of your bugs, however I am also guilty to a few of them myself (sorry!). For example, I also hate how over half my classes are online even though I am enrolled as a traditional student. Also, I hate when people leave there laundry in the machines. I personally am guilty of sleeping through my alarm and waking my roommate up. I enjoyed your list!
Hi Shaina,
ReplyDeleteAs I read the entirety of your post, I related to pretty much each and every one of your "bugs". As for your reflection, I could not agree more that it was much more difficult than expected to come up with the list in the moment. I experienced the opposite though as I completed my assignment as I found more difficult to finish my line towards the end of the assignment while I did not have as much trouble in the beginning. Thank you for sharing and I hope as much as you do that all 20 of these "bugs" happen as little as possible!
Shaina,
ReplyDeleteI particularly noticed your bug with apple and their storage capacity, and I sympathize with that completely. And not finding a spot to study during finals is not only frustrating but a huge waste of time walking around and looking for a spot.
Also, it is interesting to think about how many of us take online or semi-online classes but moved to Gainesville to go to the University of Florida. This almost seems like a waste sometimes but I like to think there are other benefits of being in Gainesville.
Great post!
Hi Shaina,
ReplyDeletePhone storage capabilities are annoying. Every company operates by the same principle of more storage=higher price. However, many Android manufacturers allow users to insert SIM cards themselves to increase their storage. Apple has disallowed this because they can profit more that way. It's an easily included feature so it's greatly disappointing that Apple has decided to put profits ahead of actual useful features. However, all companies do this in some form so it is no surprise.
